The Internet has about 57 million users as of January 1997, according to a current estimate by Matrix Information and Directory Services (MIDS), one of the foremost sources of Internet demographics.

ESTIMATES FOR JANUARY 1997

Core Internet : 36 million users of computers that can distribute information by interactive TCP/IP services such as WWW or FTP as of January 1997.

Consumer Internet: 57 million users of computers that can access information by interactive TCP/IP services such as WWW or FTP as of January 1997.
