...within.
Without putting undue emphasis on the slogan of ,,Postanalytic Philosophy'' one cannot overlook the fact that recent publications by Davidson and Putnam, students of Quine and Carnap respectivly, show unmistakable signs of an attempt to bring to a conclusion the enterprise that was started within the Viennese Circle. Cf. Davidson's contributions to E.LePore (ed.) Truth and Interpretation Oxford 1986 and H.Putnam's Reason, Truth and History Cambridge 1981. For several other philosophers arising out of the analytical tradition like R.Rorty, A.Danto or St.Cavell this observation is evident. For a recent overview compare R.Bubner Wohin tendiert die analytische Philosophie? in: Philosophische Rundschau 1987, S.257ff.

...opportunity.
The university of Vienna was considerably lagging behind the universities of Graz and Salzburg in this development. By concentrating on Vienna I do not want to hide this fact. Among the books resulting from this renewed interest in Vienna are the following: E.Nemeth Otto Neurath und der Wiener Kreis. Revolutioniäre Wissenschaftlichkeit als Anspruch Frankfurt 1981, H.Hrachovec Vorbei. Heidegger, Frege, Wittgenstein. Vier Versuche Frankfurt 1981, W.Lütterfelds Bin ich nur öffentliche Person? E.Tugendhats Idealismuskritik (Fichte) - ein Anstoß zur transzendentalen Sprachanalyse (Wittgenstein) Königstein/Ts 1982 and L.Nagl, R.Heinrich (edd.) Wo steht die Analytische Philosophie heute? Wiener Reihe 1, Wien 1986. The work of K.Dethloff, K.R.Fischer, and F.Stadler should also be mentioned in this connection.

,,Positivism'' of course served as a defamatory term in much of German philosophy after the war. An useful introduction into the general socio-political background of the Vienna Circle is F. Stadler's Aspekte des gesellschaftlichen Hintergrunds und Standorts des Wiener Kreises am Beispiel der Universität Wien in: H.Berghel, A.Hübner, E.Köhler (edd.) Wittgenstein, Der Wiener Kreis und der Kritische Rationalismus Akten des Dritten Internationalen Wittgenstein Symposiums.

I owe the idea of contrafactually imagining a dialogue of the different philosophical persuasions to an unpublished manuscript by H.D.Klein Philosophischer Idealismus und Nationalsozialismus. It is not altogether clear to me whether this device is another example of Austrian compromise (post facto) or if it can serve as an instrument in clarifying one's intuitions regarding the issues. Take it as a thought-experiment preparing for a conclusion about the real world.

I am of course painting a somewhat simplified picture, leaving B.v.Juhos and V.Kraft out of the account but both of them had barely any influence on the general philosophical climate of these days. In order to hint at some of the more subtle distinctions I might however add that at the time I am mainly concerned with at the School of Divinity - of all places - Beda Thum, a Benedictine friar and a mathematician by training, was teaching G.Frege, B.Russell and L.Wittgenstein in a very sympathetic way, arousing an interest in their work that was resolutely quelled by his more prominent colleagues in the ,,Philosophische Fakultät''.

While the work of Feyerabend and Kuhn is well known I want to draw attention to the important and original contribution of N.R.Hanson to this area of research. Cf. his Patterns of Discovery. Looking closer into this matter one finds that synthetic-a priori sentences are already very much a problem for the early Wittgenstein and that he is perfectly aware of the fact that it is on them (albeit not named as such) that the Tractatus finally founders. I have argued this in detail in Vorbei (cf.ftn.2) p. 255 ff. For a short version of the argument see: Richard Montague. Früher Wittgenstein 1971 in: Sprache und Ontologie. Akten des 6. Internationalen Wittgensteinsymposiums (hrsg. von R.Haller), Wien 1982 S.445-448.
