Abstract
The aim of the work is to show how the chapter of Geist forms a main theme in Hegel"s Phänomenologie des Geistes, and how the rest of the work can be read by using Geist as a horizon of understanding. Hegel"s holism might be most adequately described by using Geist as a model: history is conceived as a progressive and cumulative process whereby men acquire better knowledge of themselves and the world. The modern thinking is conceived as the highest stage of thinking, in regard to its self-reflexivity as well as its content. The totality of historical and cultural knowledge acquired by moderns is understood as the most advanced and all-embracing form of knowledge.
