Abstract
The semantics of the conjunction and has been mainly studied within truth-conditional frameworks. Following these theories this connective indicates that the conjuncts are true. A Gricean pragmatics is usually utilized to account for other meanings that show up in the presence of the conjunction. This paper tries to show that this semantics is neither necessary (given that the conjunction can give rise to conditional readings) nor sufficient (a great deal of interpretations remain unexplained). These results motivate the introduction of a discourse-based semantics
