Abstract
This paper has several aims. The first one is to raise an objection to Jackson and Pettit's analysis of the notion of programme explanation. The second, to offer an alternative analysis of this notion which is free from that objection. The third point is to distinguish between informative and noninformative functional explanations. And the last one is to show that informative functional explanations can be characterized as programme explanations, in the sense of the notion proposed in this work
