Abstract
The aim of this paper is to discuss through the study of language several onto-logical and epistemological issues related to human mind from the standpoint of "biological functionalism". First of all, I try to make clear the sense in which the term "function" is used in evolutionary biology. Then, I consider some aspects of human language: its neuronal basis, its evolution, its connections with other features which are proper of hominids--specially the manipulation of objects--and finally, its function in the configuration of human mind.
